With over 10 years of experience Dr. Sharma has seen it all

"I had my hair transplant outside of Canada and I'm unhappy with my results."

Unfortunately we regularly hear this at our clinic. Extremely low prices and unrealistic promises draw patients from all over North America abroad for their hair transplant procedures. While there are many reputable surgical clinics around the world not everyone is a good candidate for this niche procedure.

What are some of the reasons patients will request a hair transplant revision?

  • The new hair is not dense and appears thinner then the surrounding natural hair
  • The surrounding hair has continued to fall out leaving a gap between the relocated and natural hairline
  • It looks obvious that a hair transplant was performed
  • A significant amount of the transplanted hair did not grow
While this pains us to hear, some patients may be able to salvage their unsatisfactory results with a hair transplant revision at our clinic in Edmonton, AB.

Hair Transplant Revisions

After an unsuccessful hair transplant in India, this man came to our clinic looking for help.

We see many cases like this. Certain clinics promise miracle hair transplant results at an unbelievably low price and this is what can happen. Whether it was poor technique, or improper graft harvesting the results after his initial transplant just didn’t take. The most tragic part is that the grafts taken for his first surgery will never grow back. We all have a finite amount of grafts located in the donor area which means you are limited on the number of transplants you may receive throughout your lifetime.

Luckily, this patient had enough viable grafts left in his donor area to perform a revision hair transplant. Using just under 2,000 grafts we were able to add density to the front, while also cleaning up his uneven hairline. Being only the 6-month mark, he still has a full year of growth ahead of him. We were truly honoured to have him trust our clinic after such a bad experience. I hope he can feel confident about his hair again and put this botched surgery behind him.

A Google Review from Dr. Sharma's Hair Transplant Revision Patient

“I got my FUE hair transplant from Dr.Sharma last year. The whole experience from initial assessment to surgery to after care was amazing. This was my second hair transplant. I got my first hair transplant in India but it didn’t yield good results. I did my research for my second hair transplant and decided to go with Dr. Sharma and I am glad I did. I am now 10 months post op and have a full head of hair with a natural looking hairline. I definitely recommend Dr. Sharma and his team.”

Am I Eligible for Multiple Hair Transplants?

One of the primary factors which will determine if you are a candidate for hair transplant surgery is the donor area. This section is located at the back of the head, above the neck.

The reason hair transplants from this area are successful is because the hair from the donor site are resistant to DHT (Dihydrotestosterone – a byproduct of testosterone). DHT is the primary cause for male pattern hair loss. When hair is transplanted from the back and sides to the bald area on the front or top of the scalp, the hair follicles maintain their original characteristics and will, continue to grow.

This holds true for both the F.U.E. & F.U.T. hair transplant technique. The gentleman pictured here elected to use the F.U.E. method to minimize the visual scarring at the donor area.

How do I know if my donor area is suitable for another procedure?

Determining donor hair suitability is something that takes time and experience. For this it’s important to be examined by someone with experience in the hair transplant field – ideally a doctor. During the consultation with Dr. Sharma he will determine not only if your donor area is viable for transplant but he will also give you an idea of how many grafts you may need.

What can I do if I'm not happy with my hair transplant from out of country?

It’s crucial to get things right the first time. With invasive surgery that requires incisions of any type scaring is an unavoidable reality. While modern hair transplant techniques leave relatively small scars the tissue created around each incision reacts, looks, and feels different forever.

Give the hair more time to grow

Hair grows slowly. This is compounded by surgical process which can stunt hair growth cycle slowing things down even further. Improperly educated patients will often fear that the surgery was unsuccessful due to staggered growth during the 1-4 month mark. At Sharma Skin & Hair Surgery in Alberta we educate patients that they are only seeing 60% of the final growth by month 6 post-surgery. At the one-year mark they can expect to see roughly 80% of growth with the full amount shown one and a half years following surgery day.

Tattoo Gun

“Hair tattooing” is a cosmetic remedy that involves filling lacking areas of the scalp with a custom coloured pigment that simulates the appearance of a shaved head. While this can hide the areas of hair loss it’s merely an illusion and can be detected upon closer investigation. While this procedure is not offered at Sharma Skin & Hair Surgery it can be useful for patients without a sufficient donor reserve.

Depending on the cause of the hair transplants unsuccessful growth & the clinics policy you may be eligible for a second “top-up” procedure. If the reason for the poor growth is due to improper post-care, personal healing, or external factors you will likely not be eligible. Some patients ask us “Do you offer a 100% guarantee for your hair transplant results?” and the answer is no. No medical clinic or surgical center could ever in good faith offer such a guarantee. Medical procedures are a mix of art and science with thousands of factors – some of which out of the doctors control. To offer any such promise is immoral and a marketing ploy.

Additional Hair Transplant Surgeries

Supply & demand is the name of the game. Depending on the size of the recipient site sometimes more grafts will be required to fill and densify it to give the desired result. There is a limit to how many grafts can be transplanted during one single procedure. One factor is time out of body. Grafts are living tissue and the hair transplant procedure involves removing and relocating them. Without access to oxygen, moisture, and nutrients (all of which are supplied by the body) their chance of successful transplant is reduced. To achieve the highest yield of newly transplanted hair there needs to be a balance of speed, precision, and medical integrity. Clinics offering surgeries of 4,000 – 7,000 grafts are doing this to your detriment. Simply put, realistic expectations and guidance are what an honourable clinic will strive to give.

Ex-Plant (Anil, is this correct?)

This form of hair transplant surgery is performed when a patient wishes to relocate transplanted grafts. We can simply remove the grafts and discard of them, or re-transplant them into a new area. The most common cause for an ex-plant would be for a patient who has relocated hair to the forward hairline and continued to see significant hair loss causing a gap between the “new” hair and the naturally existing hair. Unfortunately, the success rate of an graft which has been transplanted multiple times decreases due to __________________, this makes ex-planting a large number of grafts more risky then a traditional transplant. This is a complex situation and we highly recommend seeking an in-person consultation for anyone requiring this technique.

Hair Transplant Frequently Asked Questions

While this is possible, it’s not ideal for hair transplants addressing to the scalp. The hair grown from each follicle will remain the same regardless of where on the body they are placed. For this reason, transplanted body hair may be noticeably different then your natural hair.

This primarily depends on the quality of hair on your donor site. You are required to have a certain amount of hair density at the back of your head so we can transfer it to the desired area. If you have a large demand for density or coverage at the front of your head, then you need a large amount of eligible donor grafts in the back.

Hair transplants are commonly charged per graft. More grafts does not always mean a better result. Placement, skill, and precision are huge factors in your end result. Our Hair Transplants start at $6,000. You can view our handy pricing guide here.
